About Notare
Notare exists because the legal transcription industry is changing, and the tools available have not kept pace with what working professionals actually need.
Automatic speech recognition is a powerful productivity aid, but every ASR tool on the market produces output that requires substantial human review and correction before it is anywhere near client-ready. Speaker misidentification, formatting gaps, mishears, and context errors are known, recurring, and expected. Newer models have improved, but no model has solved these issues.
What has been missing is a tool that understands the workflow after the ASR is produced: the formatting, the jurisdiction-specific rules, the template compliance, the speaker attribution, the proofing, and more. That is where reporters and transcribers spend their time, and that is what Notare was built to address.
Our Approach to AI
We are not building AI to replace transcriptionists. We are implementing AI in the most efficient and practical ways possible, as a productivity aid that respects the professional's role in the process.
ASR output is a starting point, not a finished product. It is the professional's responsibility to produce a complete and accurate transcript, and that does not change because a tool generated the first draft. Notare makes that first draft better: better formatted, better attributed, better organized, so the human review process is faster and more focused.
The integrity of the legal record depends on human oversight. Every transcript Notare produces is a draft that requires professional verification before certification or filing. We are transparent about this because accuracy in the legal field is not aspirational; it is mandatory.
Who We Are
Notare was conceptualized by Elizabeth Knittle, a working court reporter who designed the feature set from direct courtroom and deposition experience. She has written extensively on the practical implementation of AI in legal transcription workflows.
The platform was engineered by Terry Taylor, who built Notare to meet the standards that working court reporters actually require, not the standards that software companies assume they need.
We work closely with Legacy Transcription Services, and we serve court reporters, law firms, and court systems who need transcription tools built to the legal standard: tools that treat accuracy as non-negotiable and the professional's judgment as irreplaceable.
